Category:United States Geological Survey

This is the category for the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a federal scientific agency of the US Government that studies landscape, natural resources, and natural hazards.

In most cases it is NOT sufficient, for inclusion in this category, that an article cite USGS for the magnitude of an earthquake. That’s routine statistics-gathering for USGS, and probably applies to a large fraction of all articles in Category:Earthquakes, so automatic inclusion of all such articles here would dilute the category, making it less useful for finding articles of particular relevance to USGS.

U.S. Federal Judge overturns ephedra ban

Friday, April 15, 2005

A Park City, Utah, nutritional supplement manufacturer won its appeal against the FDA on Wednesday as a Federal Judge lifted a ban and sent the case back to the agency for revised rulemaking in accordance with the court’s decision.

Judge Tena Campbell ruled that no further enforcement of the FDA action can take place until the FDA reviews its current regulation.

Neutraceutical claimed in its lawsuit that the product “has been safely consumed” for hundreds of years and is not harmful at low ephedrine product levels. The FDA had decided to ban the supplement based on a reverse logic that the product had to be proven safe. The lawsuit effectively argued that it is the FDA’s task to prove that all dosage levels of ephedrine were unsafe. The court agreed with the manufacturer that this assumption could not be proven and, when taken in low doses, less than 10 mg, that agree with the product labeling, ephedrine was not shown to be an “unreasonable or significant risk.”

A group of private researchers claimed that ephedra was the most dangerous herbal product on the market. They collected data from poison control centers. It was not considered to be a drug and could not be controlled the way pharmaceuticals were, and was sold over the counter.

The death in 2003 of 23-year old Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler brought a slew of negative reports on the product that foreshadowed a sharp drop in sales.

US TV: Jay Leno bested by Conan O’Brien in late night ratings

Tuesday, November 9, 2010

Television audience ratings for U.S. TV host Conan O’Brien’s first TBS program Conan last night were higher than rival Jay Leno and his late night program on NBC, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. O’Brien’s ratings were also higher than CBS network’s David Letterman, as well as Comedy Central programs hosted by Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

Monday marked O’Brien’s return to late night television after his departure as host of The Tonight Show on NBC following a dispute this year, in which Leno’s program The Jay Leno Show was canceled after poor ratings, and NBC reinstated Leno as host of The Tonight Show.

Conan O’Brien is enjoying a sweet, sweet victory in the ratings.

O’Brien’s debut program featured guests including curator Arlene Wagner of the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum, actor Seth Rogen and actress Lea Michele. His guest schedule for Tuesday night’s program included actors Tom Hanks and Jack McBrayer, in addition to music from the group Soundgarden.

The premiere of Conan was watched by over 4.1 million viewers. Nielsen ratings data made public today showed that Leno’s program The Tonight Show was only watched by 3.5 million viewers, and Letterman’s Late Show was seen by 3.4 million people. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report were watched by 1.3 million and 1 million viewers, respectively.

O’Brien announced his move to TBS, a cable channel founded by Ted Turner and owned by Time Warner, in April.

O’Brien’s viewership trended towards younger people, with 2,451,000 individuals ranges from ages 18 to 34 – and 3,285,000 people in the 18 to 49 age demographic. Leno’s The Tonight Show, in comparison, only drew in 950,000 people in the same younger demographic breakdown.

In an analysis of O’Brien’s ratings win, Dave Itzkoff of The New York Times wrote, “the debut of ‘Conan,’ the new late-night show starring Conan O’Brien, got off to a strong start”. James Hibberd commented for The Hollywood Reporter, “Conan O’Brien is enjoying a sweet, sweet victory in the ratings.”

Indian cricketer Sehwag announces international retirement

Wednesday, October 21, 2015

Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag yesterday announced his retirement from international cricket matches and the next Indian Premier League season. Opener Sehwag played his last test match in March 2013 against Australia. He scored 8,586 runs, including 23 centuries, in 104 test matches, with a batting average of 49.34.

Sehwag, who turned 37 yesterday, said on Twitter “I hereby retire from all forms of international cricket and from the Indian Premier League. A statement will follow.” He stated he has not retired from first-class cricket matches, and he is also scheduled to appear in the Masters Champions League in February 2016.

Also known as the Nawab of Najafgarh, Sehwag is the only Indian cricketer to score a triple century in test matches, making 309 runs against Pakistan in 2004 and 319 against South Africa in 2008.

Sehwag stated, “I have always done what I felt was right and not what conformists thought to be right […] God has been kind and I have done what I wanted to do, on the field and in my life, and I had decided some time back that I will retire on my 37th birthday.”

Fellow Indian cricketers praised Sehwag when news of his retirement broke. Sachin Tendulkar referred to Sehwag’s “tremendous achievements” and “superlative performances”, V. V. S. Laxman called him “a pure entertainer”, and Ajinkya Rahane described him as “an inspiration to billions of cricket fans across the world.”

India: Maharashtra plastic ban comes into force

Monday, June 25, 2018

On Saturday, the plastic ban in the Indian state of Maharashtra came into force. In an attempt to minimise pollution, the state government has introduced a ban on single-use plastics.

The leader of the Yuya Sena political party, Aaditya Thackeray, said on Twitter, “The ban on single use disposable plastic cups, plastic bags, plastic straws, plastic plates and cutlery, styrofoam cutlery and non woven bags”. He added, “these are global issues now and we have taken a step to combat it”.

Plastic pollution has led to the choking of drains, marine pollution and a risk of animals consuming plastics. This year, India’s motto for World Environment Day — June 5 — was “Beat Plastic Pollution”. People violating the plastic ban are to face a fine of 5,000 Indian Rupees (INR) for the first offence. For the second offence, the fine is INR 10,000 and the third time offence is INR 25,000 and a three-month prison term. Deputy municipal commissioner Nidhi Choudhary said, “To weed out corruption, we plan to give inspectors payment gadgets for electronic receipts of the fines”.

The Maharashtra government has given a 90-day period for manufacturers to dispose of existing polyethylene terephthalate (PET/PETE) plastic spoons and plates, while shopkeepers and citizens in general have six months to dispose of plastics. However, the ban does not prohibit plastic usage for wrapping medicines or milk cartons thicker than 50 microns.

The state government had announced the decision for the plastic ban on March 23. According to NDTV’s report, Maharashtra is the eighteenth Indian state to enforce a state-wide plastic ban. Aaditya Thackeray also said, “I congratulate the citizens for making this into a movement, even before the ban was enforceable, giving up single use disposable plastic.”

The Air Compressor Parts And Service Pa Companies Need

byAlma Abell

Companies that use air compressors must be able to rely on this equipment to function effectively. If the business is involved in manufacturing, any compressor downtime could deal a significant blow to their profits. The air compressor parts and service PA retailers provide must therefore be of the highest quality. One of the sore points for many buyers of this type of equipment is the fact that technicians sometimes seem ill-prepared to deal with some problems. This can happen when a dealer does not ensure that all technicians are properly trained. They will send out the ones with minimal training to handle basic jobs, and leave the more complex problems to technicians with better training.

Companies like Air Center Inc PA, ensure that all of their technicians are fully trained to respond to any kind of compressor problem their customers will have. A full inventory of compressor parts is another advantage they provide to customers. If you buy a compressor, the retailer must always have parts for the products they sell in stock. Buying from a retailer that does not carry spare parts is unwise, as you could end up searching for parts if the air compressor goes down. This is especially important if you buy a rebuilt or refurbished compressor from the company. Even if it is in good condition, it may break down quicker than a new system. Having spare parts is integral since you will need to get it up and running quickly.

The air compressor parts and service PA companies need must always be of the highest quality. Sending your damaged compressor to a general repairman could prove to be a costly mistake. A retailer that also provides maintenance and repair is the best option to deal with any problem you have with your system. Before you make the investment in an air compressor for your company, determine what kind of after sales service is available. Large systems may sometimes need to have some sections rebuilt, and there are companies with qualified technicians who can handle these complex jobs. If you have not chosen a compressor for your business, you can also explore the option of getting one custom built. This is a cost effective way to get exactly what you need. This will also guarantee that any problem can be easily dealt with by the company’s technicians. Click here for more information.

Little Rock Nine member Jefferson Thomas dies aged 67

Tuesday, September 7, 2010

Jefferson Thomas, one of the members of the Little Rock Nine, a group of African-American students who were enrolled in Little Rock Central High School in 1957, has died at the age of 67. His death was confirmed by fellow Little Rock Nine member’s Carlotta Walls LaNier and Minnijean Brown. The cause of death was announced as pancreatic cancer.

As a student at Dunbar Junior High School, Thomas volunteered to integrate into all-white Little Rock Central High School. Along with eight other African-American students Thomas attempted to enter the high school on September 4, 1957 but they were stopped by the National Guard. It would not be until September 23 the students would enter the school for the first time.

After leaving high school Thomas joined the U.S Army and served in Vietnam as a staff sergeant. When he returned to the United States he worked in the family business and later for the Department of Defense.

Little Rock Nine member Melba Beals commented on Thomas’s death. She said “No matter what we were talking about or no matter how awful the day had been, he could always make a funny joke about it,” she said, recalling their days at Central. “We are in deep pain thinking of him. We are all a family in a way. This is a great loss.”
