20 dead in Hyderabad, India flyover collapse

Sunday, September 9, 2007

At least 20 people have died and 20 more are injured after a partially constructed flyover (overpass) in Hyderabad, India collapsed onto traffic.

The disaster occurred at the Panjagutta junction, near Nagarjuna Circle. Two large concrete sections dropped onto oncoming cars and motorised rickshaws, damaging several severely.

A large emergency effort was immediately activated, but experienced severe difficulties in reaching the site due to congested traffic resulting from the collapse. Ambulances from the 108 EMRI Service and Appollo Hospitals attended the scene, and rushed the injured to a variety of nearby hospitals. All the region’s major hospitals, particularly the nearby Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences, have placed their medical staff on emergency alert. Rescuers are now using cranes and cutting equipment in an effort to reach anyone who may still be trapped. It is expected that the death toll could rise further as many vehicles remain trapped under tons of debris.

Various politicians also attended the scene, including the local district collector, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy, Senior Congress Leader and MLA from Khairathabad P Janardhan Reddy and several other ministers.

Police have asked both the public and the press to keep away from the area, in order to prevent further collapse of the unstable structure. Preliminary investigations suggest the flyover had been been poorly constructed. The construction project had been carried out by leading contractor Gammon India Limited. It had been delayed, the original foundations having been built in 2005. After a successful request by the company to have the deadline for the project extended, work was slated to cease in November of this year, with the flyover entering operation by December. It is believed heavy rains in the area a few hours prior to the collapse may have contributed to the disaster.

Three men arrested under suspicion of organising dog fights in southern Finland

Wednesday, August 15, 2007File:240-dogFighting.jpg

Three Finnish men have been arrested as part of an investigation by the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) into apparent illegal dogfights in various locations in the south of the country.

Dog fights, in which two dogs are pitted head-to-head for the entertainment of spectators and for gambling, is illegal in Finland, and is covered by Finland’s animal protection laws, as dogs often sustain severe or even fatal injuries. It is believed this case also involved gambling, thus rendering the suspects, if convicted, in breach of gambling laws also.

The investigation was started in July after the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) forwarded information to the NBI, claiming that during an investigation of its own for a programme it was making into dog fighting in the United Kingdom, they had uncovered connections to comparable activity in Finland.

“We are trying to find out when the activity has started and how widespread it has been. Apparently, just a small gang of people has been involved.” said Detective Chief Inspector Göran Wennqvist, adding that “We are now trying to find out whether or not this is part of a larger international organisation or just local criminal activity.”

It is believed the dogs went through training fights to test if they were suitable for fighting prior to actual events. A number of animals thought to have been used for fighting have been examined by a veterinarian to determine the types of injuries sustained by the dogs.

Despite the fact that dog fighting is known to have occurred in various countries – including countries close to Finland, such as Sweden, Norway, and Russia – neither the police or the Finnish Kennel Club were aware of any previous incidents occurring in Finland, although chairman of the board of the Finnish Kennel Club Martti Mannersuo told reporters that he recalled a rumour “many years ago” of domestic dog fights occurring in Finland, although this went unconfirmed. Wennqvist, however, independently told YLE “In other Nordic countries, they have seen incidents of dog fighting since the 90’s, but I haven’t come across any cases in Finland in 32 years,” although it is unclear if this was a confirmed case or if it were linked to the rumour Mannersuo had reported.

Common Mistakes Black Women Make When Caring For Their Hair}

Submitted by: Danielle McLoughlin

It is common knowledge by now that Black women tend to spend a lot of money on their hair. Money is spent on everything from shampoos, conditioners, pomades, hair tonics, and treatments to hair extensions, wigs and hair pieces. Every month, new glossy adverts are published with the latest miracle product that promises to solve one of your hair woes or the other. Be it restoring your hair line to its original glory, or growing your hair to lengths youd never dreamt possible, each new product promises wonders.

Ive often noticed that whenever there is a buzz word in the hair care industry, new products quickly appear on the market with the buzz word splattered across its labels and advertising campaigns. For example, argan oil has become popular recently for its moisturising and conditioning effects on hair. As a result a plethora of new products have appeared clearly highlighting the fact they have argan oil in them. It is easy to get carried away by the many benefits these products claim to have and start using too many of them at once.

Black women, who are always on the look out for hair products that will make their hair easier to style tend to fall into this trap time and time again. Below Ive laid out the common mistakes Black women make when caring for their hair which leads them to spend excessively on hair care products.

1.Receeding hair lines are usually a result of traction alopecia, so addressing the cause of traction alopecia itself will produce quicker results than applying some miracle growth product while wearing tight braids or weaves. It would be like taking a headache tablet because youve banged your head against a wall, then continuing to bang your head against the wall after youve taken the tablet and expect it to work. It wont. Stop the cause of hair pulling that is causing your traction alopecia before you begin treating it.

2.Miracle lotions and potions to treat bald patches or receeding hair lines are a waste of time. If youve suffered from traction alopecia for a long time because of weaves, braids and hair pieces, first take a break from the extensions, then use a proper hair growth treatment like Rogaine or Regaine in Europe on the affected areas for guaranteed results. Minoxidil has been proven to treat hair loss for years so why not use it? Women often fear theyll grow a beard or facial hair, but they neednt be worried as first of all any facial hair grown isnt noticeable, can be waxed off and is only temporary.

3.The scalp doesnt not need the quantities of oil or grease that is often used to moisturise it. African American hair is naturally dry and doesnt reflect light like Caucasian hair does, so Black women tend to use oils and grease to make it shine. The hair industry loves producing these useless pomades and creams every year that claim to encourage hair growth when applied to the scalp regularly. These greases and creams only serve to clog the follicles because black women dont tend not to wash their hair regularly because of how dry it is naturally. If you must, use an oil like virgin coconut oil not more than once a week as it actually gets absorbed by the scalp instead of just sitting on the scalp. Note that dandruff is not caused by a dry scalp but rather by bacteria, so if you suffer from dandruff, find a suitable medicated treatment for it like Nizoral shampoo.

Now with this new found knowledge, take a look in your bathroom cupboard and notice how many of your hair care products you don’t really need anymore.

Sweden’s Crown Princess marries long-time boyfriend

Monday, June 21, 2010

Sweden’s first royal wedding since 1976 took place Saturday when Crown Princess Victoria, 32, married her long-time boyfriend and former personal trainer, Daniel Westling, 36. The ceremony took place at Stockholm Cathedral.

Over 1,200 guests, including many rulers, politicians, royals and other dignitaries from across the world, attended the wedding, which cost an estimated 20 million Swedish kronor. Victoria wore a wedding dress with five-metre long train designed by Pär Engsheden. She wore the same crown that her mother, Queen Silvia, wore on her wedding day 34 years previously, also on June 19. Victoria’s father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, walked Victoria down the aisle, which was deemed untraditional by many. In Sweden, the bride and groom usually walk down the aisle together, emphasising the country’s views on equality. Victoria met with Daniel half-way to the altar, where they exchanged brief kisses, and, to the sounds of the wedding march, made their way to the the silver altar. She was followed by ten bridesmaids. The couple both had tears in their eyes as they said their vows, and apart from fumbling when they exchanged rings, the ceremony went smoothly.

Following the ceremony, the couple headed a fast-paced procession through central Stockholm on a horse-drawn carriage, flanked by police and security. Up to 500,000 people are thought to have lined the streets. They then boarded the Vasaorden, the same royal barge Victoria’s parents used in their wedding, and traveled through Stockholm’s waters, accompanied by flyover of 18 fighter jets near the end of the procession. A wedding banquet followed in the in the Hall of State of the Royal Palace.

Controversy has surrounded the engagement and wedding between the Crown Princess and Westling, a “commoner”. Victoria met Westling as she was recovering from bulemia in 2002. He owned a chain of gymnasiums and was brought in to help bring Victoria back to full health. Westling was raised in a middle-class family in Ockelbo, in central Sweden. His father managed a social services centre, and his mother worked in a post office. When the relationship was made public, Westling was mocked as an outsider and the king was reportedly horrified at the thought of his daughter marrying a “commoner”, even though he did so when he married Silvia. Last year, Westling underwent transplant surgery for a congenital kidney disorder. The Swedish public have been assured that he will be able to have children and that his illness will not be passed on to his offspring.

Westling underwent years of training to prepare for his new role in the royal family, including lessons in etiquette, elocution, and multi-lingual small talk; and a makeover that saw his hair being cropped short, and his plain-looking glasses and clothes being replaced by designer-wear.

Upon marrying the Crown Princess, Westling took his wife’s ducal title and is granted the style “His Royal Highness”. He is now known as HRH Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland. He also has his own coat-of-arms and monogram. When Victoria assumes the throne and becomes Queen, Daniel will not become King, but assume a supportive role, similar to that of Prince Phillip, the husband of the United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/AL-KY

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Emaar Properties claims Burj Dubai as world’s tallest building

Sunday, July 22, 2007

United Arab Emirates (UAE) developer Emaar Properties has claimed that their Burj Dubai commercial and residential tower, currently under construction, has become the world’s tallest building, reaching a height of 512.1 metres (or 1,680 feet) and 141 storeys.

The current official record holder, Taipei 101 of Taiwan, has a height of 508 metres and 101 storeys, and will retain the “tallest building” title for some time to come. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat sets the criteria for achieving height records for buildings, and will not evaluate the Burj Dubai until construction is complete in late 2008. Although final height details have been kept secret by the developer, the Burj Dubai is expected to reach nearly 700 metres in height, with approximately 160 storeys.

The current record holder for the world’s tallest free-standing structure is the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada. It has a height of 553 metres. The Burj Dubai, therefore, would claim both records when it is completed.

Once the Burj Dubai is completed, it will have required 330,000 cubic metres of concrete, 39,000 tonnes of steel and 142,000 square metres of glass, according to Emaar Properties. The building will have 56 lifts (elevators) that can move at a rate of speed of 1.75 to 10 metres per second.

Dubai is undergoing a construction boom currently with the Burj Dubai as the planned centrepiece of a $US20 billion project, which will eventually realize some 30,000 apartments and boast the world’s largest shopping mall.

There have been criticisms of the working conditions for construction workers in the UAE. A majority of the estimated 500,000 construction workers in the UAE are foreign workers from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

In a 2006 report on the UAE’s treatment of migrant workers, entitled Building Towers, Cheating Workers, Human Rights Watch documented abuses in UAE such as, “extremely low wages, several years of indebtedness to recruitment agencies for fees that UAE law says only employers should pay, the withholding of employees’ passports, and hazardous working conditions that result in apparently high rates of death and injury.”

In October of last year, Human Rights Watch delivered specific recommendations to the UAE government for improvement of working conditions. The UAE government acted swiftly on the report and put in place several improvements, which were applauded by Human Rights Watch.

However, the salaries of migrant construction workers remain in the range from $106 to $250 per month, while the national average wage is over $2,000 per month. Trade unions remain illegal in the UAE.

Kids for modeling are used all over the internet as well as off line. They usually begin in catalogs or as advertisements online. Proud parents can watch as their child models begin to get more confidence and learn how to present themselves before the camera. Models young enough to sell products like toys and child clothes are very much needed in the industry. The problem is that most parents have no idea how to get their children into modeling. Before a parent can get their child into modeling, they need to have photographs of them taken by a professional photographer. These will be used for the portfolio of the child. Marussia F1 test driver Maria de Villota seriously injured in testing accident

Tuesday, July 3, 2012

The Marussia F1 team’s test driver, Spaniard María de Villota, was taken to hospital by air ambulance today after a collision in testing at Duxford Aerodrome.

At the end of her first installation run, the car she was driving had a low-speed collision with the loading ramp of the team’s support truck. According to BBC Cambridgeshire presenter Chris Mann, the car “suddenly accelerated” into the rear of the vehicle. The Marussia team released a statement an hour and a half after the accident, stating that she had been transferred to hospital, and a further statement would be issued once her condition had been assessed.

A spokesman for the East of England ambulance service, Gary Sanderson, said de Villota had “[…] sustained life-threatening injuries and following treatment at the scene by paramedics, she has been taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for further care.” According to witnesses, she was motionless for about fifteen minutes as medical teams attended to her, but did move her hands before being taken away from the test track. Medical charity Magpas, whose volunteer paramedics attended the accident, reported she had sustained injuries to her head and face, and was in a ‘stable condition’ when she reached the hospital.

Marussia reported her as conscious later in the afternoon: “Since Maria’s arrival at the hospital at approximately 10.45am this morning, she has been receiving the best medical attention possible at the hospital, which is the region’s major trauma centre. Maria is conscious and medical assessments are ongoing. The team will await the outcome of these assessments before providing further comment. The team’s first priority at this time is Maria and her family.”

De Villota was announced as Marussia’s test driver in March, having prior experience driving for Alan Docking Racing in Superleague Formula in Spain.

Police report drug haul seizure worth up to £30 million in Brownhills, England

Monday, December 2, 2013

Police in the West Midlands in England today said nearly 200 kilograms worth of drugs with value possibly as great as £30 million (about US$49 million or €36 million) has been seized from a unit in the town of Brownhills. In what an officer described as “one of the largest [seizures] in the force’s 39 year history”, West Midlands Police reported recovering six big cellophane-wrapped cardboard boxes containing cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA (“ecstasy”) in a police raid operation on the Maybrook Industrial Estate in the town on Wednesday.

The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated

The seized boxes, which had been loaded onto five freight pallets, contained 120 one-kilogram bags of cannabis, 50 one-kilogram bags of MDMA, and five one-kilogram bricks of cocaine. In a press release, West Midlands Police described what happened after officers found the drugs as they were being unloaded in the operation. “When officers opened the boxes they discovered a deep layer of protective foam chips beneath which the drugs were carefully layered”, the force said. “All the drugs were wrapped in thick plastic bags taped closed with the cannabis vacuum packed to prevent its distinctive pungent aroma from drawing unwanted attention.” Police moved the drugs via forklift truck to a flatbed lorry to remove them.

Detective Sergeant Carl Russell of West Midlands Police’s Force CID said the seizure was the largest he had ever made in the 24 years he has been in West Midlands Police and one of the biggest seizures the force has made since its formation in 1974. “The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated”, he said. “The drugs had almost certainly been packed to order ready for shipping within Britain but possibly even further afield. Our operation will have a national effect and we are working closely with a range of law enforcement agencies to identify those involved in this crime at whatever level.”

Expert testing on the drugs is ongoing. Estimates described as “conservative” suggest the value of the drugs amounts to £10 million (about US$16.4 million or €12 million), although they could be worth as much as £30 million, subject to purity tests, police said.

Police arrested three men at the unit on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. The men, a 50-year-old from Brownhills, a 51-year-old from the Norton area of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, and one aged 53 from Brownhills, have been released on bail as police investigations to “hunt those responsible” continue. West Midlands Police told Wikinews no person has yet been charged in connection with the seizure. Supplying a controlled drug is an imprisonable offence in England, although length of jail sentences vary according to the class and quantity of drugs and the significance of offenders’ roles in committing the crime.

Alternative Medicine Wheatgrass Juice Alternatives}

Submitted by: Pat Munro

A few years ago, after a long illness I was introduced to a book by Dr. Ann Wigmore about wheatgrass juice. I must admit it seemed a little too easy an alternative to taking medication. Juicing and drinking grass, the thought seemed ridiculous until I read Anns books Be your own doctor and The Wheatgrass Book.

Firstly, Ill tell you a bit about Dr. Ann Wigmore. She was born in Cropos, Lithuania on March 4, 1925. As a young girl she hid and survived alongside her grandmother during the German, Russian occupation which lasted two years. With no provisions left, they ate on mostly long grasses during that time, along with roots and tree bark. Her survival rested on these few foods. At the young age of 16, she moved to Massachusetts in America to join her parents. She married and had a baby girl, then divorced in 1955. This is when everything changed for Dr. Wigmore. In poor health, she began using chlorophyll from weeds and wheatgrass juice to heal herself, and it worked. Thus began 35 years of learning and promoting natural healing, and in 1963 she opened The Hippocrates Health Institute, in 1985 the Ann Wigmore foundation was begun. Over her long-lived career she toured with lectures, writings and giving wheatgrass demonstrations to over 35 countries. Ann Wigmore’s contribution as a humanitarian, educator, writer, and tireless promoter of natural health to our lives is astounding.

The chlorophyll of wheatgrass is used by the body as a cleanser, rebuilder and neutralizer of toxins. Scientists have studied wheatgrass and have isolated over one hundred elements from the fresh wheatgrass juice and concluded that it is a complete food. Fifteen pounds of fresh wheatgrass juice is equivalent in nutritional value to 350 pounds of the freshest vegetables. Wheatgrass chlorophyll constitutes the greatest blood cleanser and builder known. It is rapidly assimilated into the body because its composition is similar to the hemoglobin molecule in the blood. It can actually save a life when oral feeding is impossible.

Wheatgrass seeds can be found at most herbal and natural food stores. Soak the seeds for ten to twelve hours, then drain and sprout for another twelve hours. Then place a similarly sized tray over top in order to keep the light out and the moisture in. Four days later remove the top tray and water the green, keeping them in the light and watered daily. Once the grass has grown to about seven inches high (about seven days), they can be cut just above ground level. You can grow this anywhere, even an apartment windowsill.

To extract the juice you must either gnaw it, or use a slow action meat grinder. Do not use a blender, the fast acting blades oxidize the chlorophyll. The chlorophyll must be used immediately after extraction for maximum benefit. This is due to the juice being perishable and starts to deteriorate immediately after extraction.

The grass itself can be kept in the refrigerator immediately after harvesting for up to a week, and still be potent.

I have been growing, juicing and drinking for over a year now, and I feel fantastic. It takes a while to get use to the taste-yuck. I tried mixing it with juices I like such as orange or pineapple, but it just tainted my love for those juices. I found its best to just go for it. All I need is one shot glass full in the morning and my day gets started. I suggest wheatgrass juice to all my friends, some try some dont, such is life. I highly suggest trying it in your life. It wont kill you and will make you stronger. Good luck.
