GM recalls 1.3 million cars over steering issues

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

General Motors (GM) announced on Tuesday a recall of 1.3 million Chevrolet and Pontiac cars in the US, Mexico, and Canada over problems with the power steering system.

Recalling these vehicles is the right thing to do for our customers’ peace of mind

The models, the 2005–2010 Chevrolet Cobalt and 2007–2010 Pontiac G5 in the US, the 2005–2006 Pontiac Pursuit in Canada and the 2005–2006 Pontiac G4 in Mexico, were affected by a fault that causes the power steering in the vehicles to fail. The company says that cars can still be safely controlled even after the loss of power steering, although more effort to turn the car would be required.

GM is currently working on developing a fix for the problem, after having conducted an internal investigation for more than a year, beginning last January. In addition to GM’s investigation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also conducted an investigation on the Cobalt, which began in January 2010. The investigation was begun after more than a thousand complaints about the model were received by the agency, including reports of 14 crashes caused by the fault. GM contacted the NHTSA about the problem on Monday.

GM blamed the issues on an external supplier partially owned by Toyota, another company currently in the process of a major recall of more than eight million vehicles. According to GM vice-chairman Bob Lutz, the supplier, which was not named, had not met “all requirements for reliability and durability.” In his comments, given at the Geneva Motor Show, Lutz also said that financial responsibility for the recalls had yet to be determined.

Hundreds of thousands rally in Australia against IR legislation

Tuesday, November 15, 2005

People rallied in 300 locations across Australia today to protest the Federal Government’s proposed changes to industrial relations laws, WorkChoices. According to police, around 150,000 people congregated in Melbourne, from where speeches were broadcast throughout the country. In Sydney, thirty thousand gathered in Belmore Park and Martin Place to watch the broadcast before marching to Chifley Square.

Sharan Burrow, President of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU), said that under the changes many working conditions would be under threat, including “penalty rates, public holidays, overtime pay, control over rostered hours, shift penalties, even 4 weeks annual leave.” The government has claimed, despite various expert assesment to the contrary, and opposition from major Australian religious and charity organisations and some concern from its own backbench, that the IR changes will improve the economy and ultimately benefit workers, and dismissed the protests as having “little effect”.

Iranian air politician blames pilot error for yesterday’s jet crash

Monday, January 25, 2010

Reza Nakhjavani, head of Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization, has publicly stated that he blames yesterday’s jet crash on pilot error. Nobody was killed when the Tupolev Tu-154 crash-landed and caught fire on the runway.

Media reports at the time said the aircraft was performing an emergency landing in Mashad owing to a passenger requiring medical attention. Nakhjavani said that he is yet to see confirmation of this passenger’s existance, and accused the pilot of placing one life before over 150 others; there were a combined 170 passengers and crew aboard.

The Taban Air plane then crashed in the fog and caught fire. The aircraft sustained a tailstrike followed by landing gear failure and the right wing breaking. Forty-six people were injured and the Tu-154 burned on the runway. Nakhjavani claimed the pilot’s actions were illegal and he had no clearance to land, also blaming Air Taban and stating they were negligent.

Hamid Behbahani, Minister of Roads and Transportation, also blamed “human error” for both the air crash and a train accident the same day that killed nine people. However, he stated that the foggy weather conditions also played a role in the plane crash. Taban’s license is currently suspended.

Iran uses a number of Russian and Soviet-built aircraft, particularly Tupolevs. In recent years these have had a high accident rate. Last year a Tu-154 crash killed 168 people shortly after takeoff from Tehran heading to Yerevan, Armenia. It was the worst accident in Iranian aviation history. RIA Novosti has stated that this fleet is aging and in urgent need of maintenance and repair work, while Iran blames international sanctions which they claim prevent the import of spare parts except low-quality products from Russia.

Regardless of the causes of the problems Iran has experienced with its Tupolevs, the nation today banned the import of any more Tupolev Tu-154 aircraft. Meanwhile, Russia has sent a team from the Interstate Aviation Committee to assist investigations. Under the Convention on International Civil Aviation the state which manufactured an aircraft typically assists any probe into an accident involving it.

The Interstate Aviation Committee was set up after the collapse of the Soviet Union to replace the single body in place across the USSR. If Iran concludes negligent pilot error was indeed to blame then the country cannot sanction the flight crew since they are employed by Russia’s Federal Aviation Service. The Russian party to the investigation issues flight is responsible for licensing pilots.

Fishing In Our Trip From Miami To Key West

Fishing in our trip from Miami to Key West

My boyfriend loves to fish, so while we were on vacation in southern Florida, I promised I would find him some fishing expeditions to go along with all of the fun stuff that I wanted to do. Our first stop was in Miami, we were going to be taking day tours from Miami to Key West while down there, and I found the Reel Adventures Charter boat in Miami.

We took the Spellbound and went in search of kingfish, sailfish, snappers, and marlins. I wanted to watch them catch the fish, I knew nothing about how to catch a fish, but the men who ran the boat showed me how. I thought that once you caught the fish you would have to let it go and all I could think about was the Mitch Hedberg joke about fishing and just trying to make the fish late for something. You can do that on this boat or you can have the crew clean and bag the fish for you. They have a list of recipes for each type of fish that you can use, too, if you are craving the fish you caught, but have no idea what to do with it. That was me. My boyfriend had a pretty decent idea of what he was doing, but just in case, I convinced him to grab a few recipes so I could learn how to properly make fish. We went out on that expedition the second day we were in Miami. We then traveled down to Key West in search of more exciting and exotic adventures. In the Key West tour guide we found the Dream Catcher adventure. They are another offshore fishing expedition. Here we boarded the Triple Time boat that takes you out to where you can fish down deep. They also have rooms with air conditioning for girls, like myself, that were all fished out already. My boyfriend enjoyed himself out there though. I enjoyed being out on the water, relaxing, and watching the men trying to catch these fish. This time it was more difficult, so I got a kick out of trying to watch Tom catch the fish. He was struggling a lot, poor thing. He did finally catch a medium sized fish and I was proud of him. The room that I was in was really comfortable and made my time there enjoyable. After our fishing expeditions, we got to go snorkeling and scuba diving and, of course, shopping. I really enjoyed traveling through the Keys and seeing the magnificent islands on our drive from Miami to Key West. The drive wasn’t too long and the scenes made up for it. I highly recommend going the driving way if you plan on traveling to Key West. It was such a relaxing vacation and everything was so bright, clean, and gorgeous. I really felt comfortable wherever we went and took everything in. It was an experience I will never forget, even if it did involve fishing, something I never thought I would do. But, hey, when in Rome (or Key West), do as they do. They’re all about fishing so why not give it a shot.

Smoke from massive warehouse fire in Buffalo, New York USA can be seen 40 miles away

Monday, May 14, 2007

Buffalo, New York —A massive warehouse complex of at least 5 buildings caught on fire in Buffalo, New York on 111 Tonawanda Street, sending a plume of thick, jet black colored smoke into the air that could be seen as far away as 40 miles.

As of 6:40 a.m., the fire was under control, and firefighters were attempting to stop it from spreading, but could not get to the center of the fire because of severe amounts of debris. Later in the morning, the fire was extinguished.

“The fire is mostly under debris at this point. It’s under control, but it’s under some debris. We really can’t get to it. We’re just going to have to keep on pouring water on it so it doesn’t spread,” said Thomas Ashe, the fire chief for the North Buffalo based fire division who also added that at one point, at least 125 firefighters were on the scene battling the blaze. One suffered minor injures and was able to take himself to the hospital to seek medical attention.

Shortly after 8:00 p.m. as many as 3 explosions rocked the warehouse sending large mushroom clouds of thick black smoke into the air. After the third explosion, heat could be felt more than 100 feet away. The fire started in the front, one story building then quickly spread to three others, but fire fighters managed to stop the flames from spreading onto the 3 story building all the way at the back.

According to a Buffalo Police officer, who wished not to be named, the fire began at about 7:00 p.m. [Eastern time], starting as a one alarm fire. By 8:00 p.m., three fire companies were on the scene battling the blaze. Police also say that a smaller fire was reported in the same building on Saturday night, which caused little damage.

At the start of the fire, traffic was backed up nearly 4 miles on the 198 expressway going west toward the 190 Interstate and police had to shut down the Tonawanda street exit because the road is too close to the fire.

At one point, traffic on the 198 was moving so slow, at least a dozen people were seen getting out of their cars and walking down the expressway to watch the fire. That prompted as many as 10 police cars to be dispatched to the scene to force individuals back into their cars and close off one of the 2 lanes on the westbound side.

One woman, who wished not to be named as she is close to the owner of the warehouse, said the building is filled with “classic cars, forklifts, and money” and that owner “does not have insurance” coverage on the property. The building is not considered abandoned, but firefighters said that it is vacant.

Officials in Fort Erie, Ontario were also swamped with calls to fire departments when the wind blew the smoke over the Niagra River and into Canada.

It is not known what caused the fire, but a car is suspected to have caught on fire and there are reports from police and hazmat crews, that there were also large barrels of diesel fuel being stored in one building. Firefighters say the cause of the blaze is being treated as “suspicious.” The ATF is investigating the fire and will bring dogs in to search the debris.

SpaceX Falcon I rocket fails to orbit test satellite

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

The SpaceX Falcon 1 rocket has failed to place a DARPA demonstration payload into orbit, on its first flight into space. The rocket launched from Omelek Island, at 01:10 GMT on 21 March, just less than a year after its maiden flight which failed just seconds after launch.

The rocket, which is the first privately-funded liquid-fueled launch vehicle, was intended to place the payload into a low-Earth orbit, but all contact with the rocket was lost just over five minutes into the flight.

The first stage burn proceeded nominally, and separation occurred on schedule. As the first stage fell away from the second, it was observed to have impacted on the engine bell of the second stage. About five minutes into the flight, the second stage began to roll out of control. All data was lost at T+5 minutes, 5 seconds.

Choosing The Best Computer For Graphic Design

By John Schofield

In the 1980s, desktop publishing came out and graphic designers began to utilize computers for all kinds of things. It has soon fuelled them to be in competition with each other, in terms of computer hardware and whatnot. Desktop Publishing (DTP) are systems that were developed to replace pre-press, specialist design and compositing systems. Graphic design relies on the use of computers, either Windows PCs or Apple Macs; and all designers aim to be able to use the best computer for this purpose. Good ones will rarely choose cheap hardware for something as important as this; and it all boils down to making the finest choice.

Macs were the weapon of choice, especially in the eighties, for both designing and printing. Many design layout and graphics software was developed for Macs. Some were able to function in Microsoft Windows PC, as well, but most programs are more reliable when they are running on Mac. Nowadays, however, most designing software can easily be used in both Mac or PC. Graphic designers no longer have to choose one anymore.

Most graphic design experts are not even IT literate; and they spend quite an awful lot of time making a decision of which computer to choose. If money, of course were to be considered, then the choice would be a lot simpler. If you wish to make your choice based on which one was more valuable, then you would just buy the most expensive in the list. Unfortunately, since most graphic designers cannot afford expensive hardware, and often only have money to buy second-hand computers, they focus themselves on the secondary considerations: colour accuracy, hard disk speed, external storage devices and monitor calibration.

Top five computers for graphic design

Mac Pro Desktop: Most graphic designers still prefer the Mac line, among all the others. Apple says that Mac Pro features the all-new quad-core Intel Xeon ‘Nehalen’ processor that simplifies every graphic designer’s job. It is 1.9 times faster than the one that came before it, and it is equipped with an integrated memory controller that allows it to have faster access to the data that has been stored in the memory, allowing designers to complete their jobs in record time.

MacBok Prop Laptop: This one is available in 13. 15 and 17 inches, and operates in high-performance NVDIA graphics and LED backlit display. The battery power, compared to the others, is able to last for up to eight hours, and it is powered by the Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

Dell Studio XPS Desktop: Equipped with an Intel Core 15 and 17 processors, the Dell Studio XPS Desktop is perfect for video and 3D-editing jobs, especially if you upgrade your system to the 16GB and Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM. A simple 3GB will probably allow you to edit photographs and create vectors and raster designs quite easily, and is able create clear, flawless and precise graphics like no other hardware can.

Toshiba Qosmio Laptop: It is the most affordable solution for your graphic designing needs and it is powered by Intel Core 15 or 17 processor.

HP Pavilion Elite Desktop: Another rather affordable computer that is either powered by AMD Anthlon or Intel Core processor. It has memories that range between 4GB up to 9GB and is able to guarantee smooth and effortless graphics.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/AL-KY

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

G20 Summit plans to inject US$5tn into economy before 2011

Friday, April 3, 2009

The G20 Summit held in London, England concluded Thursday with an injection into the economy of US$5 trillion by the end of 2010.

Global trade would be supported by $250 billion (169.5 billion pounds). “We are going to act decisively to kickstart international trade. We will ensure availability of at least $250 billion over the next two years,” said Gordon Brown Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

The International Monetary Fund IMF will have access to $750bn in resources of which $250bn will support special drawing rights.

Developing countries received $100bn which will be dispensed via Multilateral development banks. Towards this end, the IMF will sell off gold reserves.

China will support the IMF fund by $40bn, the European Union by $100bn, and Japan by $100bn.

There will be increased regulation on banking and credit ratings agencies. There was a commitment to clamp down on hedge funds, tax havens and toxic assets. To restore consumer confidence in the financial sector, a new Financial Stability Board will be initiated internationally. There would be new policies implemented to control pay and bonuses paid to the heads of banks and corporations.

The G20 leaders were adverse to protectionism and rallied to support international trade and investment.

The Leaders’ statement said, “We reaffirm the commitment made in Washington: to refrain from raising new barriers to investment or to trade in goods and services, imposing new export restrictions, or implementing World Trade Organization (WTO) inconsistent measures to stimulate exports.”

Eoin O’Malley, senior adviser on international trade at BusinessEurope, said “The measure also needs to be part of wider package to avoid protectionism and conclude the Doha round which will stimulate trade growth. The key point now is to move forward with Doha. The key now is implementation. G20 governments must act quickly to provide this finance to companies that need it urgently.”
